Baby Name

We are having the hardest time thinking of names even though we have a huge book of thousands of names. Hannah and Nikki are really pulling for Alex. I like that, but I don't think it's my favorite. What names do you like?

Boys' names are so hard! We could name 20 girls, but have ALWAYS struggled with boys' names. My favorite names lately are from the scriptures. Joseph's little group of friends includes a David, Jacob, Gabriel (Gabe), and get this - Emma Smith, who happens to be our Joseph's best friend.

I agree...boy names are so hard! I always get a kick out of my friends who say they will wait until they meet their baby to name him/her. That doesn't work for me because their look changes daily in the beginning!! Anyway, I voted for Jared. I always liked that one, but every "J" name has already been used in Joe's family!

I just looked at your vote results...you have 1 vote for each so far! Good luck!!

We're struggling with a name, too, only for a girl. :) We always choose a name we like paired with a family name. We have the name we like, we just can't decide on a family name. We've used the ones closest to us, some of them are names we're just not crazy about, and some are ones that don't seem to fit with the name we like. Oh, and then Cory and I both have to agree on it. *SIGH* Thankfully we still have some time. Good luck. We totally had a boys name picked out--then we found out it was a girl! I voted for Ryan--I liked the way it sounded when I said it with Hannah and Nikki. I also like Andrew, Owen, Oliver, Jonathon, James, and Jackson, too. I'm a little obsessed w/ names, so something else I like to do is search by name meaning. Like I'll search for names that mean "God's Gift" or "Blessing" or something like that. Can't wait to hear what you choose. I'm sure it will be perfect!

Robin votes for Ryan because she likes how it sounds with Robbins.

We are just going to totally confuse you! And when it comes right down to it, our opinions don't matter. You're the one that has to live with the name day in and day out. But if you're asking I'll give it to you. I don't like any boy names! Well, you know that if Brenna was a boy it was going to be pretty hard to name her - or I guess it would have been him. I do think that Ryan Robbins has a nice sound, but I voted for Alex. Someone had to side with Hannah and Nikki! :)

Thanks for the advice everyone! I like scripture names too, but sometimes I wonder if Nikki would feel left out if Hannah and the new baby were scriptural and she's not. I'm a little nervous about the middle child thing. :) With Hannah and Nikki I was able to find scriptures that went really well with the meaning of their names, and I would like to do that again, but we'll see. With so many brothers and nephews between Nate and I, it's hard to find something that hasn't already been used. The girls like Alex, I like Ryan, Nate likes Jared. We'll probably end up with something totally different before the baby comes. But I'm not telling anyone our final decision until he's born. Everyone already knows it's going to be a boy, and there has to be some kind of surprise. I think it's funny that each name got a vote in the poll!

Just in case this helps - we decided after the first few boys that we didn't care if someone else had already used the name we liked. Greg and I both liked Garrett (and it was a miracle we agreed on another boys' name), but we had shied away from it because his cousin has a son named Garrett. Finally, we decided that we could handle the confusion for the one weekend a year that we see them. Don't be afraid to repeat names...someone might just be honored to have a little namesake.

I agree that it's hard when you're in a big family and there are so many names that have already been used. Just in the immediate family there is quite a bit of overlap in middle names and even a similar sounding one here and there. I do think, when it comes down to it, if its a name you love or has sentimental value you have to go with it regardless of who else has the name. That being said, we like names that aren't the trendy name of the day, so it can be a little off-putting to have someone close named the same thing. We like the uniqueness of it all. What a balancing act!!! Just for the record we're still undecided on one name. I'll be glad when its settled. :)

Haha, Mike! Not a bad idea though -- he would have a great namesake.

And Lydia, we'll keep those names in mind. Thanks for the help!

Ooooh! Good idea Lydia...how about George Lucas Robbins! Just thought I would keep the count on comments climbing up :)

If you named him Michael - would you call him Michael or Mike??? You know how Michael (Mike) feels about nicknames. :)

Maybe we can just call him George Michael Lucas Aaron Jared Ryan Robbins so he can be like one of those middle eastern people with fifteen names. -Nate
