Camping in the Mountains

This weekend we went camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We stayed at a campground right on the Blue Ridge parkway. It was a fun little getaway. We got to do some hiking, see some waterfalls, a cavern, and the Blowing Rock. The girls think the highlight was seeing a lizard and playing with their flashlights. Hannah was afraid she was going to burn her hand in the campfire, so she didn't really enjoy roasting hotdogs or marshmallows. I think the Doritos were a bigger hit than the s'mores. We always have graham crackers around, but we never have chips. All in all, we had a great time and hope we can go for another weekend trip this fall when the leaves are changing.

I thought of you! The mountains are so beautiful. We want to go back in October when the leaves are changing colors. Any suggestions of cool sights that we shouldn't miss?

They are so beautiful in the fall. That is one time of year when I always feel a little homesick. There are lots of fun little spots up there, even just driving along the parkway is nice. There are a couple of different spots we like. One is Mabry's Mill. You can go for breakfast there (old-timey, southern cooking) and then walk around the grounds. It used to be an old grist mill and you can still see a lot of the stuff they used. Lots of times they will have someone working the forge or basket-weavers around. It's a neat little place. It's near Meadows of Dan (that's a town), and we always like to stop and this candy store nearby. I think it may be something like "Nancy's". But they have almost every flavor of fudge in the world there--from traditional things like peanut butter and snickers, to pb & j, lemon, etc. And they freely give out samples, so that's fun. They also have lots of "kids candies", lollipops and other stuff. There are also a couple of parks we like. One is Rocky Knob. There are picnic shelters and everywhere there are tons of rocks--big and small. Lots of fun for kids to climb on. Cumberland Knob is a nice place too. There's a hike/trail, nice picnicking area and a huge field for running, frisbee, kites, or ball. Way, way, way on toward the bottom tip of NC is the Cherokee Indian reservation which is pretty cool. They have a re-inactment, an outdoor drama called "unto these hills" that is neat. And I think there is an emerald or gold mine nearby where you can pan for gold and gems. Anyway, those are just a few places, off the top of my head that are places we've been and like to go. Glad you enjoyed your trip!!! :)
